I think he was 5 years old.

I’ve always wanted to play an instrument.I started the piano as a child but had to stop due to some circumstances.Last year I decided I wanted to play an instrument I could carry with me & i was really entranced by the violin.I haven’t found a tutor yet but i would like an opinion from those who play or have tried to play the violin on what to expect. Thanks

I play the piano & at around the intermediate level.
My dream is to play the violin in an orchestra, but I am just a beginner now. However, It’s easier for me I think than the other beginners because of my piano background.
but I find playing the violin harder than playing the piano.
My question is approximately how many years will I reach decent level to join a community orchestra?
How many hours should I practice a day?
P.S. What do you need to know to play in an orchestra?

I’m pretty serious about music. I’m about grade 6/7 on the piano, grade 2ish on the violin, & I’ve only been playing for about 3 months. I practice IMMENSE amounts. I want to make music my career (colllege teaching) when I’m older, so I need real help with this.
I’ve been renting a violin for a few months, really cheap, but it’s quite a good violin. It stays in tune perfectly, even through the winter, & it has what my teacher & I think is a nice tone etc. But, I need my own violin. I can’t keep renting one for the rest of my life!
I know some of the stuff like, the strings need to be the correct distance from the board & the bridge has to be lined up & not too arched, but not too flat, & the wood should be close-grained etc etc etc. But I don’t actually know what is the right height from the board & how arched the bridge should be! So, I need some help. I COULD buy the one I’m renting, but… I don’t like the way it looks! I mean, I know that’s not what matters, but it matters to me. It’s not something that I’m messing around with!

I was asked to play violin for a wedding ceremony. It is my first time to play at a wedding, by just myself. I have no idea how much to ask for. $50-75 I was thinking? Is this too little or too much?

Probably because it doesn’t have any rosin on the bow. Brand new bows have to have a LOT of rosin before they’ll “catch” the strings & produce a sound.

i am confused doesn’t new violin have rosin already applied to the violin or do i need to use rosin or is there something wrong with the violin. thank you in advance.

I just got a new violin, but I need to know how to use this stuff.

I’m a violinist in the orchestra in my high school & I’m doing everything I can to get better at it. So far my efforts are proving fruitful, but I have a problem; I can’t relax my left wrist.
Now, I’m one of those people who like to hit all my notes perfectly, so I play pretty in tune. I’ve always had some trouble vibratoing, but I’m getting much better at it. However, my vibrato lessens the more I move up the fingerboard. I’ve been to summer camp recently & one of my teachers noticed my tight left wrist, especially when I shift. She told me to relax it… but I couldn’t do it!
It gets worse… I can’t tell when my wrist is relaxed or not! She demonstrated for me & let me feel her wrist, but I just couldn’t find a difference either way.
I didn’t really note the problem earlier, but I know that this is going to affect my playing in the future. Does anyone have any advice on keeping my wrist relaxed when I play, or at least be able to detect it when it’s not relaxed?

I have been looking around & reading up on guitars, & I have borrowed my cousins for now. When I buy a guitar, what questions should I ask. I’m buying my first electric guitar, but I have played the violin for 8 years. A person at a store told me I shouldn’t get a beginner guitar because I have musical experience. & where do you think I should buy the guitar ( ex. Guitar Center, etc… ) Thanks in advance!

I am writing & notating music for a project. As a pianist I read music in treble & bass clefs & understand quite a lot of musical terms. I want to put violin parts in my score but don’t know how to put the various expression marks in which would make the music sound like a violinist & not just a sampled sound played on keyboard. I can hear in my head what I want to do but don’t know how to notate it! The aim is to have the score played by musicians. Any ideas anyone. Thanks.

When you wish to create a very dark, macabre or sad piece of music, how will you play your violin?
Is there any actual terminology used for different styles of playing, for example, “plucking”?
If I wanted to create a dark atmosphere how would I play the violin?

I am going for a year to Europe & it is almost vital that I take my violin with me as I want to get lessons there & also hopefully get a job playing it. It is worth over AU$2000. I am flying with Thai Airlines & carry-on luggage must fit in a 54×46cm space. My violin case is 75cm long & my bow is around 65cm long.
I have been told that instruments have been known to get broken when travelling down in the hold, even when labelled ‘fragile’. Has anyone done this themselves?
My violin teacher said that she knows someone who carried their violin in a silk bag on with them & held it the whole time. I could do this, but I am flying from Australia & I will be in transit for around 24 hours & it may get broken in this long time.
I could buy or borrow/hire one over there, but I don’t have much money, have only just got this one, & it is quite good already. Also, it would be a pain selling it at the end of the year.
What do you think my best option is?

why is it that when i play in the middle of the bridge of the violin the tone isn’t that nice, it kinda makes a whistling sound. That’s why i play near the fingerboard..

I pulled out my old violin which I haven’t played in 6 years, & when I run the bow along the strings they make no sound whatsoever.
The bow has some stray hairs & the strings have never been changed on it.
I’ve tried playing harder, but so very faint sound is all I can get.
Why is this?

Because after i play for five minutes my shoulders start to hurt & so do my arms from supporting the violin & my hand supporting the violin starts to sag, & my violin teacher always gets mad at me. Is there a way that i can improve the time i hold my violin up, such as arm exercises or anything.
