That would be rosin, but I wouldn’t try putting it on the strings. I would stick with the bow. =P
It’s not actually a stone, it’s a solid resin.
It comes in two varieties (yes, you can but nicer, more expensive rosin, or cheap rosin, but I’m not talking about that) – Light & dark. Dark can be used for violins, violas, cellos, & basses. Light is just for violins (and maybe violas?) & cannot be used for cellos. Dark rosin is not as yellow.

I am looking into either the viola or the violin. I want to know how difficult it is to learn to play them, I have musical experience, but in choir not an instrument like this. Any suggestions about which is best or what I could do for lessons. Also, how much does it usually cost to buy one? To rent?

We have a choice of chello, violin, or a viola.
Which one has a better sound, & which one do you enjoy playing?

yeah, i’m thinking of buying a sitar, but i’m wanting to know if when your restringing it, do the strings break easily like a violin’s strings do, or are they like guitar strings to where they can stretch a little bit.

hi, I just started playing my violin again & I still make the same mistake that i’ve made in 4th grade & 8th grade, & that is playing 2 strings at once whenever I switch strings
maybe my violin is too small? its 3/4
or maybe its just normal & all violinist struggle with it? how long does it usually take you guys to be rid of that mistake?

I am going to be in a new middle school because we are moving across the country & I want to take the Strings Band. I used to play the Violin for about 2 years. I stopped playing a 2 years ago because i was to busy. I went to a teacher 1 on 1 once a week. Do you I can qualify for 8th grade strings? Oh, also I might want to try the Viola. What are some major differences between the 2. Will it be almost like the same as playing the Violin?

Schools about to start, & i wanted to get new violin strings but i don’t know what brand to get. i heard dominants are good, but do any of you have any recommendations?

I have been playing violin for 12 years & for the past 6 years I have been using Evah Pirazzi strings with the gold E. I want to switch violin strings because I have realized that they don’t last longer than a couple of months. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
PS: I’m thinking about getting the Thomastik Dominants. Anyone know if they would be a good replacement?

I have a violin that was made in 2006 & I am currently going to go into eighth grade & might be in advanced placement. I want to get a new set of violin strings. Currently I have Dominant strings & was planning on getting another set of Dominants but I would like to know if anyone had any other suggestions for less than $100.

I have read advice on how to fix a fallen bridge, & I would rather do this myself rather than have to bring it to someone to get it fixed.
However, the reason it broke was because I tried tightening the pegs because my strings were flat & the pressure made the bridge fall off. I wonder why the strings were so tight & yet still slightly flat?
And at the top where the strings go round the pegs they are not exactly…how do I put this…on each string, when it curls around the peg, each curl isnt next to eachother…the string sometimes curls on top of itself..if you get what im trying to say??? lol
anyway, im useless at violin but i really need to get this fixed before my lesson

i have been playing violin since i was 6 but i never experienced this problem with changing my strings. changed them 2 days ago, how long do the strings need to sound nice again? what can i do to speed the process if there is a way? my soundpost looks straight in place to me, & my bridge has been my same bridge sice 2 years. (strings are dominant strings)

Or is it the strings that came with the instrument? I have not yet changed them. I tuned them well & all. I got this Cello a few days ago & I have not been able to play any notes other than open strings. Well, at least not that clearly & without pain! I’m a beginner & have not found any teachers yet. Besides, I can’t afford one right now (not after purchasing this Cello; gonna have to save some cash again for that).
The thing is, it doesn’t hurt in the tip of my fingers (I also play Violin & Guitar, so my fingers have callouses), it hurts in that part of my lower arm underneath the wrist; it’s like muscle strain from the force I have to make to press down. I’m getting a little discouraged because of this. My mom suggest that I go change the Cello & all, but I know that this problem can be solved without going to that extreme! Even by me! And I don’t want to change this Cello; at least not yet in a long time. I have come to feel that it can be my voice (he’s so beautiful too, & resonant. And smells good too ) Well, are Celli supposed to be this way? Or is the cheap strings that came with it that are too heavy? How do I know the problem is not the bridge or the nut?

When there is a tense part of a movie, why do most movie makers use strings (i.e violin & others) in the background? What is it about strings? Same with sudden parts.
I’m thinking about the movie “Psycho” (You know, Alfred Hitchcock). Hitchcock uses a lot of strings throughout the movie. Why?

ok im NO expert at tuning with pegs, so i neeeeed help please!!! my mom was gone while i tried tuning my D, so i couldnt have her do it… my violin was left in th car while shopping for awhile, & got wayyyy outta tune! like everything was flat. i got the G string tuned, but when i attempted the D, it broke:( i feel bad, cuz thats the 2nd time i broke a string. the problem at first was, i heard the correct D, but as i let go of the peg, it slid back:( so i tried pushing it a lillll bit farther…and SNAP! tips/help/advice pleaaaase. i know i sucked & am horrible at tuning with pegs, i already know. so please dont insult me:(

Probably because it doesn’t have any rosin on the bow. Brand new bows have to have a LOT of rosin before they’ll “catch” the strings & produce a sound.

I play the violin & we have a strings/chorus concert in December. Black & white are the only options. What should I wear?

i like Bellafina bows & Evah Pirazzi strings.

I don’t have a good ear for these things, but maybe Bruce Springteen fans know..

When I try, unless my bow is in the exact correct position, it sounds awful! I think there must be some kind of hint that would help me because I see others doing it pretty easily & they havent even been playing as long as I have. Thanks for the help!
