Violin Answers

I just got an old guitar but the strings are way too old to tune without them snapping. I want to play Classical Guitar & don’t know what type of strings to put on. I play Violin & Viola so I am not worried about my fingers being hurt by the strings.

I’m a little confused about the difference between steel ball end strings & steel loop end strings. Does it matter what kind of end it has?

for the past while, ive been playing with perlon cored strings made by dominant (or thomastik) but i want to try out some steel cored strings. what are the advantages/ disadvantages over perlon strings, & what is a good brand that make nice steel cored strings in the same price range of dominant strings ($40-70)?

You may have noticed that the lower strings (D & G) have a thin band of metal wrapped around them, (if they are Perlon or steel) This is called a flat wound string. It makes the string smoother & covers the fiber or steel band underneath. E is generally considered too thin to be wrapped. Dominant strings have a synthetic core however, so they advertise that their E’s are wound.
The only reason I can think of for doing that is to create a uniform sound across all four strings. I know that some string manufacturers actually coat their strings with silver, gold, & even platinum to get a unique sound, so a wound E is not out of the question. The main thing to look out for with any wound string, is when the string starts to become unwound! You can get metal shards in your fingertips, which may become infected, or at the very least have to be dug out like splinters. You should inspect your strings every time you play anyway. Remove caked rosin, especially from the underside of the strings, & clean them every time you play. Hope this helps.
