What do U Think? Do orchestras only play classical music ?

I remember when I was young, my parents made me take piano lessons. They said it was one thing to be educated but it is another thing to be cultured.

I want to play songs that are a little more up to date than Mozart & Bach

its sorta fast paced & cool… not slow like in classical..

It looks like (for violin) :
1. a slow & fast movement from a19th/20th century concerto
2.one movement from unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita.
3. one Paganini caprice
You have to submit these on a tape or CD in order to get an invitation to a live audition.

So… do girls (particularly the older ones since Im almost 20) find it attractive when a guy can play the violin?

but i don’t know where to start, right now money is kind of tight so i have to pick one & learn from books & or videos…

i´m studing classical music but I heard some country music & I liked it a lot, but when i tryed to play it my violin sounds like in a orchestra, & when i listen to country music (like bluegrass) fiddles sound diferent, what I have to do to play a fiddle, not a violin?

I was just wondering if any of u on Y!A played many instruments. I play Violin currently, I played Flute of 2 years & could probably still play, I taught myself Clarinet, I taught myself Guitar, & I used to take Piano lessons, but i can still play a little by ear.

Any songs that sound hard to play, of profetional? They have to be solos, a good example is Pertetual Motion. It sounds profetional, its a solo. Anything? 10 points to best answer!!

Yes I know I have an awful taste in music.
Someone suggested Klezmer but that’s not exactly what I’m looking for.
It probably could be closely related to ‘circus’ music.
Sorry I can’t be more specific, but if anyone knows what I’m asking for (and could maybe recommend some decent groups as well) would be great.

Are there any good online videos, websites, & books that can teach me the very basics of good technique for holding, playing, & taking care of a violin so that I don’t kill myself using it?
I want to learn to play the violin by myself, on my own terms. I play the piano, & it was mostly self-taught, so I figured that the violin would be a matter of picking it up & fiddling around until I got somewhere with it (like the paino).
From the yahoo!answers I just looked at I’ve gathered that if I teach myself to play violin I’ll learn bad habits, horrific technique, not master anything more than scales & possibly demolish my wrists in the process. I don’t doubt that; however, I don’t have money for $30-a-lesson classes (All the money went to the violin I just bought today).
I don’t want to spend money on teachers if I don’t have to. I’m a very self-sufficiant person & I don’t want this to become an activity that requires I go out of my way to pay money & see someone to teach me something I’m very willing to put in the time & effort to learn all by myself.

There is none. You can up the low range & especially the mid range & the volume to get more sustain (if you turn it up enough to get a little controlled feedback, all the better), but… you can’t get it to sound like a violin.
However, as answered in the other violin question… using an E-bow is the closest you can get a guitar to sounding like a violin, mostly just because there’s not attack/strum & lots of sustain (so it’s more of a swell).
You can also use reverse delay to create a similar sound, but… E-bows sound more violin-like.

Can you use a guitar/bass tuner to tune other string instruments like a violin & cello?

Need a sad song done with strings. The only one that i found the saddest is sigur ros’s Staralfur but thats it.

I haven’t heard the song, so I don’t know what sound you’re talking about.
However, you can get a “violin-like” sound using an E-bow. It’s an electronic device that makes the strings vibrate without contact, so it has a more gentle & consistent sustaining sound, kinda like how a bow does with violin, cello, etc… strings. Basically, it causes the strings to vibrate without an actual “attack” (ie: strumming the strings).
If you type “ebow” on Youtube, there’s sure to be a number of videos of people using/demonstrating them.

The strings vibrate exactly the same way as on a normal guitar, but it lacks the hollow space underneath to amplify & transmit the sound so instead a signal of the vibration is sent to an electronic amplifier that interprets the sounds & plays it electronically
