Violin Answers

Hi, I am looking into buying a violin for a very special friend of mine, whose current one is developing cracks. So, I am asking…what are good makes of violins (full size-and with the bow, case etc), the different models, & also approximate pricings (if possible-ballpark figures are fine-in AUS dollars preferably too thanks). And one more thing…what would the quality of a violin under $1000 be like? Thanks everyone for your help-it is greatly appreciated.
P.S. It is to be her birthday present…so shhhh

How do I know what size I need? And what is a good violin for a beginner? Someone bought me one for Christmas a few years ago, but it is SO cheap, that I can’t at all get it to tune without breaking a string. I am now looking for one that is good enough quality for a beginner, but not so expensive that if I end up hating to play that I waste a bunch of money (plus I am a poor college student).

Recently, I went to a music store that sells violins. After finding one, I went online later & saw that the same violin online costs 200-500 dollars less (on many sites).
Is it just because the store included a case & bow?
What’s the difference with buying one from the store or from the internet?
Which is better?

I have been looking around & reading up on guitars, & I have borrowed my cousins for now. When I buy a guitar, what questions should I ask. I’m buying my first electric guitar, but I have played the violin for 8 years. A person at a store told me I shouldn’t get a beginner guitar because I have musical experience. & where do you think I should buy the guitar ( ex. Guitar Center, etc… ) Thanks in advance!

I’m just learning how to play violin & really enjoy it but want to buy my own off of ebay, what is a “must have” for a beginner violinest?

Hello.
I’ve been playing the violin for two years, but i’ve been renting the one from my school.
I’ve been poking around trying to buy my own, but don’t really know where to start.
Ideally, I’d like a full size 4/4 violin that can act as both a regular violin AND an electric violin, or just an electric violin itself.
Can anyone reccomend any great/decent brands or models that I can get without breaking the bank?

Im 16 & I have always wanted to play the violin but I took up the piano instead now I want to learn the violin but I have no idea what a good or bad violin is so I want a good electric violin perferably not an expensive one so if you can help me out that would be great!

I’m interested in getting one & taking lessons.

So, I’ve been playing the violin for the last 9 years, & it’s been a huge part of my life. I’ve played in symphony orchestras, string ensembles, & generally hung around the classical music scene…’cause, you know, where else do you play the violin? Not saying I don’t love it (I do), but…it’s getting a little repetitive. And I don’t plan to major in performance.
I think I’m ready to dabble in some different genres besides classical. I love classic rock, progressive, & metal…As you can imagine, my violin can’t stand up to the drums & the electric guitars.
So…where do I start? Can anyone recommend some brands? I’ve been doing research online, but I’d like to know how the brands differ…And what about pedals? Which ones should I start off with? What kind of amp should I get?
And I’d especially like to hear from anyone who plays the electric violin. What do you use, what kind of music do you play, where do you play, what has your experience been like…etc.

I’m considering buying a second violin bow in case something happens to my 1st bow & the violin shop is closed. I know many serious violinists keep two bows. I was wondering id the second bow should be a composite (black) one since I have one that is fiberglass & looks like wood.
I am looking for an inexpensive one under $100. I like ordering from Southwest Strings.

So my violin bow has been losing a lot of hair in the past few months, & the coil of the bow has been loose since last year, & is now currently being held with tape.
My teacher suggested buying another bow, & my aunt told me that I could buy a bow on Amazon– with the costs paid by herself.
Problem is, I’m not sure which bow is durable, & which one isn’t.

Which would you recommend to purchase?

I am buying an electric/silent violin for a student. There are those that have extra 2 strings, I guess the regular ones have 4 strings … I am not into violins so I don’t really know. So, is there anybody out there who can help answer whether a student can use a 5 or 6 string violin? Is it difficult to learn from compared to using the 4 string violins? I don;t want the student to end up not using it.

Is there a perticular violin bow that is better than others. I am asking because the bow that came with my violin has a gap of hair missing. Should I just get the hairs replaced or should I buy a new bow?

Ok, I bought a Violin from a music shop that did not specialize in violins. I wanted a very beginners violin so I got the cheapest one. It only cost me $90 & came with a rosin, bow, & case (lol). I guess I got what I payed for because the bridge popped off within the first 5 minutes. I put it back on & tried to tune it & I broke the strings because the pegs wouldn’t stay in place. We took it to a diff. shop than where we bought to have it strung & they said that it had bad pegs so they couldn’t tune it. We took it to the place where we bought it & the guy said the pegs were “tension tuners” & you had to pull the peg out, turn them, then shove them back in. The guy tuned it, I got it home & it was already out of tune. I turned the pegs & it just got more out of tune, so I tried use the fine tuners. I played it for a few minutes & the bridge popped off again.
I decided to take it back for as much money as I can, & rent a quality one from a shop that sells nothing but Violins. What should I look for in a violin to avoid all of this?
