You know, playing an electric guitar with a violin bow, like Jonsi from Sigur Ros, or any other artists who do this. I’ve tried, but so far it hasn’t worked out so well. Can anyone give me any tips?

Does anyone out there know how to play flautando? I can’t get it to do what I want! Does the violin really sound like a flute, or is that just a bunch of b.s.?

I started violin last month, & have been having the same problem! My teacher is getting frustrated (and of course I am too). He thought me how to hold the bow & how to bow using the wrist, & not the arm. But I can’t seem to get the hang of it. For example, when my wrist goes upward during an up-bow, the bow ‘floats’ away from my pinky & when my wrist goes down for the down-bow, the bow ’slips’ inwards & it rests on the 3rd joint of my index finger, instead of the 2nd joint. All these leads to the bow ‘running’ about. So when I try to hold the bow steady, my bowing switches to ‘arm’ mode, instead of wrist movement, which my teacher calls ‘rowing’. Any advice please? This problem seems to be my main obstacle from progressing as I can already read notes & such. Thanks!

I’ve played violin for a many years, but my INCORRECT way of bowing has always been bothering me. When i play up bow & down bow, my wrist is not loose & doesn’t move up & down with the bowing. Also, my bowing hand tends to hold the bow more to the left, so i’m basically holding the stick instead of more toward the frog. When my hand tries to move more toward the frog of the bow, it’ll eventually move back to my old habbit, or that my hand get loose of the bow that i can’t control it.
I’m really desperate because my wrist hurts everytime after i practice.
So, please give any advise of ways to practice to change to the right way of bowing.

Erm, yeah. My strings teacher in school assigned this homework asking “There are 3 geometric ratios of bowing for violin, what are they, & write the descriptions.”

I play the cello (quite well), but I thought it would be use to me to learn the violin as well, so I bought one & started teaching it to myself, but I find that -for the technique I use to bow (which I got from the cello)- the strings are too close together horizontally.
To explain it better, lets say I want to play a note on the D string, the bow always ends up catching on th A or the G string, is there some bowing technique i’m missing?

How do I put the hairs of the violin bow on my strings, is it a little bit inclined or just flat? You see, when I saw some videos in youtube showing a close-up of bowing through cellos & violins/violas, I can see the aren’t laid flat on the strings, so now I’m confused

i need a detailed help on how to reverse the violin strings to be able to play or bow it with my left hand. I’m left handed & i find it very hard to use my right in bowing. Should i buy new strings, bridge, or just the old? I really need a good help thanks.. ^^
