Should I Put Nylon Or Steel Strings On My Guitar?

I just got an old guitar but the strings are way too old to tune without them snapping. I want to play Classical Guitar & don’t know what type of strings to put on. I play Violin & Viola so I am not worried about my fingers being hurt by the strings.

You need to find out if you have a classical or acoustic guitar. You can’t put steel string on a classical guitar or it will tear the bridge out. If you put nylon string on an acoustic, it won’t sound half as good as a classical.
Whatever you decide, get light gauge strings to make it easier on the fingers. If you want to play classical guitar, you definitely need nylon strings.

Left T is correct..you need to know what kind of guitar it is. A steel string or a Classical acoustic.
A classical guitar looks like this :http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co…
a steel string headstock looks like this:http://www.guitarfactory.net/Images/Mart…
You can’t really interchange strings on them. Although….technically you might be able to put ball end nylon strings in a steel string acoustic, but you would need to make several modifications to the bridge & nut to accomodate the thicker strings.
Plus if you are playing “classical” guitar music, a true classical guitar would be best for the finger plucking involved, since the strings are farther apart.
