That’s not one question, but many. You should read through the Quik FAQ:http://beststudentviolins.com/Quik_FAQ.h…
    Which includes:
#1 Can I teach myself to play the violin?
#4 What instrument should I play?
#5 Which instrument is easiest to learn?
#13 I’m a new violin student; show me pages online to help me?
#16 Is it too late for me to learn to play the violin?
#19 I’m a complete beginner; how long will it take me to play at an acceptable level, & how much will it cost?

I agree that it takes talent & practice. I wouldn’t invest so much on it without knowing if you have talent & discipline. I’d first buy an affordable set & try it out before investing thousands of dollars. Places like tootnmusic.com has good deals for beginners & intermediate. I’m on their newsletter & they have a 10% off deal for the summer. Coupon code is SUMMERMUSE.
    Good luck!

i agree, there really aren’t such things as an “average” when it comes down to learning an instrument.
but, i personally played both the violin & the piano. i think learning piano is easier. there are less components that you have to learn, & as long as you can read your notes & get your beats/timing right, i think you’ll be fine with the rest. the violin can be a little tricky

No such thing as ‘average’ when learning an instrument, be it via lessons, classical training, self teaching, etc.
It depends on a combination of talent, dedication to practice, interest in music, & many other things.
I’d say buy a starter 4/4 from a reputable music store. There are many cheap instruments to be found that aren’t pieces of junk, or you could alternately find on in the musical instruments for sale section of craigslist or the local paper.
Also, there are many, many websites which will give practice tips online for free, & I am sure there are a number of youtube videos covering basic lessons. I know there are for my instruments (bass, guitar, mandolin, cello, trumpet, & more).
