I started violin last month, & have been having the same problem! My teacher is getting frustrated (and of course I am too). He thought me how to hold the bow & how to bow using the wrist, & not the arm. But I can’t seem to get the hang of it. For example, when my wrist goes upward during an up-bow, the bow ‘floats’ away from my pinky & when my wrist goes down for the down-bow, the bow ’slips’ inwards & it rests on the 3rd joint of my index finger, instead of the 2nd joint. All these leads to the bow ‘running’ about. So when I try to hold the bow steady, my bowing switches to ‘arm’ mode, instead of wrist movement, which my teacher calls ‘rowing’. Any advice please? This problem seems to be my main obstacle from progressing as I can already read notes & such. Thanks!

How do I know what size I need? And what is a good violin for a beginner? Someone bought me one for Christmas a few years ago, but it is SO cheap, that I can’t at all get it to tune without breaking a string. I am now looking for one that is good enough quality for a beginner, but not so expensive that if I end up hating to play that I waste a bunch of money (plus I am a poor college student).

i was considering taking violin lessons there because their lessons price were much cheaper. 20-25 dollars for each half hour.
have anyone ever been taught there?
is it a good idea?

I have been playing piano for 11 years & guitar for 4. So, I decided on buying a beginners violin. I didn’t have much money to spare towards a violin so I bought one online from Crystalcello for 50 dollars. It worked well for the first week, but then the bridge snapped.
I then taped the bridge together so that I could keep practicing while I waited for another bridge in the mail. I decided on buying a new & more expensive bridge & better rosin.
The violin is very squeaky & makes a sort of ‘crunch’ sound. I was wondering if anyone would suggest anything else besides buying a ned bridge (if that alters or improves the sound at all). Would better strings make a difference as well? Or should I simply keep practicing my bowing?
Either way, my technique has improved & the squeaking has lessened, but I’d like to get rid of it completely.

So… do girls (particularly the older ones since Im almost 20) find it attractive when a guy can play the violin?

If you want to learn the violin & you are not just looking for something that you can do great in a short time, go for it.
Please take lessons or classes. Without a lot of help you will quit soon. The first 6 months you really must have help.

So I put the rosin on the hair of my bow before I play the violin. Well, now my violin has tons of white rosin stuck to it’s strings & body, how do I get it off, & how do I prevent it from happening?

I always play 2 strings at once!!!!!!

I’m a rather interesting individual & I recently started playing violin. I love the sounds & tunes it can make… but none of the current music (with violin) is really catching my eye. I like 3OH!3, Nevershoutnever!, Stereo Skyline, etc. Anybody have any ideas for music WITH VIOLINS that I might like? Please & thank you.

I have been looking everywhere for a violin lead sheet music for Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor. All I can find are the strings & piano version which makes practicing really difficult because with the piano parts its 8 pages. The violin parts should only be 2-3…Does anyone know where I can find one? Preferably free not insanely overpriced?

I got an electric violin as a gift & I am so excited to play it but it won’t make any sound! I’m probably just making some stupid mistake but whenever I try to move the bow across the strings, it won’t make any sound. I got it tuned at a music shop so I don’t think that’s the issue. I played the violin as a child so I’m somewhat familiar with the instrument but not an electric violin. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong? Thank you so much!

My grandson is left handed. Bught a violin & music store placed strings the other way. Now the chin rest is on the wrong side.

Ok, so I just got new strings for my violin. One day, my D string was out of tune & I was tuning it with my fine tuner & the fine tuner got stuck! I can’t turn it left or right. What can I do to try to fix it before I take it to a luthier?
